Will of William Dare (b 1605):

November 16, 1667.
"unto Gertrude my daughter in law the house she now lives in during her life lying in Lyme .....aforesaid. And after she dies I give the same unto William Dare her son and to his heirs forever."
(In her will, Gertrude left "one shillen to my son William Dare")

"Also I give and bequeath unto Nicholas Dare my son all that message and ... which I of late purchased of and from Thomas Dare and John Tamon lying within the fith of S. Lyme in the county of Devon called by the name Youall and all my estate and house and term therein -"

We believe we have located the estate - still called Yawl Farm - in Uplyme, a few kilometers inland from Lyme Regis. An old mill is also located nearby, which we believe was once run by the Dare family. The mill in Lyme Regis proper was definitely run by various Dare family members before this William Dare, according to court documents we have recovered. Of course a number of Dares were also elected Mayors of Lyme Regis. (See Dare Family Timeline)

(Lyme Bay is an area of the English Channel situated in the southwest of England between Torbay in the west and Portland in the east. The counties of Devon and Dorset front on the bay.)

On a Sept. 7, before 1649: Prince Charles (1630-1685) (son of Charles I \endash 1600 -1649) contracted with Captain Robert Dare, of Lyme, for the hire of the Constant Warwick. (From State papers at the Public Record Office in London. This was one of the William Dare's wife's name.)

Notes: A possible cousin of Robert Dare:

A Bible printed by John Archdeacon, printer to Cambridge University, (NO TE John Archdeacon was appointed University printer in 1766 at a sala ry of £140 per annum, 5 times more than his predeccesser Crownfield) was s old in England on e-bay in August of 2005.
The Bible has an interesting history, the front bears the legend Robert Da re Bridgend Glamorgan. He was born at Ottery Saint Mary Devonshire in 176 1. We have traced him and have found that in the 1790's Thomas Wyndh am of Dunraven Glamorgan was instrumental in bringing Robert Dare from Dev on to manage his great new woolen mill in Bridgend.
To the rear of the Bible are 3 pages giving details of the Dare and Childe roy Compton families, ie. births, deaths, marriages, etc., between 1761 a nd 1889. The last entry is the death of Francis Compton Dare at Glamorg an aged 86 January 15th 1889. There is also a large sheet of sermons whi ch were preached, with other information during 1800, possibly in Robert D ares hand. This has been written on the reverse side of a customs sta mp duty form for hair powder.
The Bible is bound in full leather covers, re-attached at some time (amate ur but effective), spine split down the middle, but the Bible is still bou nd reasonably tightly, pages yellowed but no tears. A rare Cambridge Bib le from 236 years ago with interesting genealogy.

5. Captain William Dare 1,6,7,8 (Nicholas2, William1) was born 1 Nov 1655 in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England,6,7,8 was christened 10 Nov 1655 in Lyme Regis, County Of Dorset (Dorsetshire), England,6 died BET MAR AND MAY 1719/20 in Nantuxit Or Newport Or Back Neck, Salem County, NJ,1,8,9 and was buried BET 15 AND 21 MAR 1719/20 in Nantuxit (Newport), Salem County, NJ.6

Notes: The progenitor of the Dare family in South Jersey was Capt. William Dar e, who emigrated from the county of Dorset or nearby Somerset, in the sou th of England, to Nantuxit in what is now Cumberland County, NJ.

In 1682 a William Dare (of unknown relation) built the "Blue Anchor" tave rn in Philadelphia, which became the headquarters of William Penn on the o ccasion of his landing in the New World. There is some debate over wheth er the owner of the Blue Anchor was our Captain William Dare or another on e, and prevailing thought is that it was not our William Dare. Evidence r ecently brought to light indicates that there were at least two other Will iam Dares living at the same time. One William Dare, Sr. left a will in C ecil Co, MD dated 1719, indicating that Robert Smith and William Dare of W est Jersey still owed him money. So this William Dare may have been a cou sin to have known him that well from such a distance.

There is a legal document in Philadelphia indicating that all his debts we re paid to a William Wright of Boston by the 26th of June 1693.
Another William Dare from Williamsburg established businesses in Maryla nd and Delaware, so he may have been the owner of the Blue Anchor Inn. Si nce so many people were kicked out of Southwestern England in 1686 aft er a failed rebellion, and since William Dares were in Lyme Regis since 14 90, it stands to reason that ther would be quite a few William Dares in t he New World.

On Aug. 3, 1695, our Captain William Dare bought one hundred acres of la nd in Back Neck, Fairfield township, and by March 19, 1696, he also had su rveyed for him, one hundred acres of cedar swamp on Lebanon Branch, abo ut five miles east of Bridgeton. Cedar was very important for building hom es, since it was not subject to the level of infestation or rot as other w ood. It was the preferred building material for homes and barns. Toda y, one can only imagine how great smelling a home completely built of ced ar would be. When one thinks of this, it gives new meaning to the phra se "Home, Sweet Home."

He is called "mariner" in some of the early conveyances. He was a man of g ood education and fine penmanship, and became one of the leading men in th is community. He was appointed sheriff of Salem County by Governor Cornbu ry (first governor of NJ), Dec. 9, 1703, and reappointed Sept. 13, 170 4. He was also appointed Ranger for Salem County in 1704, appointed Capta in of a company of militia in 1706, and appointed Justice of Salem Coun ty Court in 1707. He was reappointed as Justice in 1708 and by the seco nd governor of NJ in 1710.

He was a large land-owner, among his purchases being two hundred acr es of land at Autuxit (the region around what is now Newport), where he fi nally settled, and died there in 1720. He left a widow, Constant Dare, a nd children, William (II), Benoni (see notice of James Dare), Elizabeth, C onstant, Sarah and Robert.
(History of the counties of Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland, New Jersey w ith Biographical sketches of their Prominent Citizens, Thos. Cushing, M. D. and Charles E. Sheppard, Esq., p. 625)

About 1700 he became owner of two fifty acre tracts composing a pa rt of a farm northeast of Elmer's mill-pond. His grandchildren eventual ly settled in this area east of Bridgeton that is still today called Indi an Fields. The last Dare on this farm was David Dare who died in April 18 63. We have some maps that were drawn by early researchers showing whe re the Dares lived in Indian Fields.

More research needs to be done to see if any of the women they married we re indeed Native Americans, as there were many Indian wives married to fam ilies in that area.

He is mentioned in another book on Queen Anne's War: "New Jersey In The Co lonial Wars" by The Hon. Richard Wayne Parker. Published: The New Jers ey Society of Colonial Wars, 1919.

Colonel Daniel Cox of Burlington County, NJ.,Captain William Dare of Sal em County, NJ, Captain John Harrison of Piscataway, Major Lockhart of Hunt erdon and others participated in Queen Anne's War. This data was taken fr om the "Book of Commissions, Volume AAA PP.6, 11, 53, 181, et Passim.

In 1683, Captain William Dare sold 50 acres of ground (called “Kuldry ”) to David Sheppard, Sr. upon his arrival in Cohansey. David Sheppard (Sh eepherd) purchased land on the south side of the Cesaria (Cohansey) Rive r, Salem County, West Jersey.

Isaac Garrison remained in Fairfield Township and left many descendants. G arrett Garrison moved to Deerfield Township by the year 1700, as is sho wn in an original unrecorded deed in possession of the writer. This de ed calls him of "Daresfield near Cohenzy" and is dated September 8, 170 0. Garrett then lived on the Indian Fields Tract, just east of and n ow a part of the city of Bridgeton. This place has long been known as t he Dare farm, having been purchased by William Dare from Garrett Garris on on November 18, 1710.

Capt. William Dare, a mariner, bought 800 acres on what was known as Smi th Island. Benjamin Davis purchased a 100 acre portion of this land from C apt. William Dare, along the shore at Sea Breeze and the point of land th at is now known as Ben Davis Point. On one of the lots in Back Neck, ne ar Sea Breeze, Ben built a three story house in the year 1699. The deed f or the property dated May 1, 1699 said that Benjamin was a weaver. 11. Captain Benoni Dare 1,13 (William (Captain)5, Nicholas2, William1) was born about 1695 in , Cumberland, NJ 1,13 and died before 13 Aug 1770 in Greenwich Twp, Cumberland, NJ.

Notes: His will was dated 16 Dec 1768 and he signed the will with his mark, a lar ge "B".
Benoni's first wife was Hannah Abbott. Her father Thomas Abbott in his wil l, December 14, 1718 listed Benoni as "my son." It is assumed from this t hat Benoni married Thomas' daughter, Hannah. It would also indicate that B enoni was twenty one years old or older in 1718, thus fixing his birth pri or to 1697. Since his father first purchased land in NJ in 1695, and sin ce we know he was born in NJ, we believe his birth datwe to be about 1695.

He owned a plantation in Greenwich Twp, to which he moved, and he lived th ere until his death in 1770.

Colonial service: "Volume AAA of Com. at secretary of state in NJ:
He was a constable in Cohansey in 1727.
In 1730 he was the surveyor of highways on the north side of the Cohans ey River.
April 9, 1748 Benoni Dare, Captain of Militia. He served under Colonel Ni cholas Gibbon.

On September 10, 1730 Benoni purchased 300 acres of land from Leonard a nd Nicholas Gibbon. The land is in Stow Creek Twp, Cumberland, NJ a nd is on the Northeast side of the road from Jericho to Roadstown.

In the probate of Job Sheppard's will, 9 Feb 1758 Benoni is called brothe r. Job was his brother-in-law, since Keziah was Job's sister.
Job Sheppard (1706-1757) was the first pastor of the Baptist Church at Mi ll Hollow, near Salem, NJ.

Benoni is a name seldom used today. It originates from a Bible name giv en by Rachel to her second son (Benjamin) as she was dying. Benoni mea ns "son of my sorrow" in Hebrew. Jacob (of the Bible) refused to call h im Benoni, and instead called him Benjamin, meaning "Son of the Right Hand ." So some later descedants with the name Benoni used the nickname of Be n.
